Proposed rezoning would facilitate gas station expansion in south Barrie.

A public meeting will be held Wednesday on a rezoning application needed to redevelop and expand a Yonge Street gas station operation.

Suncor Energy wants its existing Petro Canada at 623 Yonge St. to stretch into 515 Big Bay Point Rd., and include a new commercial building proposed to contain a restaurant, convenience store and car wash in addition to the existing gas station.

The Big Bay Point Road property, almost a quarter acre in size, would be rezoned from residential single detached dwelling, first density, to general commercial to facilitate the redevelopment of the land to expand the existing gas station.

This property, irregular in shape, is located on the south side of Big Bay Point Road, east of the intersection of Yonge Street and Big Bay Point Road, and 623 Yonge St. is immediately west.

The land at 515 Big Bay Point Rd. is located within what the city calls a strategic growth area and along the Yonge Street intensification corridor.

A public meeting is one of the first stages of Barrie’s planning process.

Once held, the rezoning application will be the subject of a planning staff report - which is expected to come before city councillors, sitting as general committee, before year’s end.

Wednesday’s public meeting will be held in affordability committee’s 6 p.m. meeting in the Council Chamber at Barrie City Hall, and on-line.
