The Georgian Grizzlies men’s and women’s volleyball teams played their OCAA crossover playoff match-ups on Saturday afternoon.
Georgian’s men’s team hosted the St. Clair Saints at the Georgian Athletic Centre.
The Grizzlies used the home-court advantage to play one of their best games of the season. Georgian was able to make quick work of St. Clair winning in straight sets 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-10).
Erich Perau (Peterborough) had a team-high nine kills and four aces for a 13-point game while teammate Liam Gray (Barrie) led the team with 26 assists, six aces and nine digs.
The win qualifies the Grizzlies for the 2019 OCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship which takes place Feb. 21-23 hosted by Humber College in Toronto.
The Grizzlies will open the tournament on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 8 p.m. against the Niagara Knights who defeated the Canadore Panthers 3-1 in their own playoff match Saturday.
Georgian will make their third straight appearance at the provincial championship and the Grizzlies have finished in fourth place in back-to-back-seasons.
The Grizzlies have won three consecutive OCAA east division regular season titles but will be looking for their first ever provincial medal.
It was a tough game for Georgian’s women’s team as they travelled on Saturday afternoon to face the OCAA west division’s top team the Fanshawe Falcons in their own playoff game.
The undefeated Falcons were too strong for the Grizzlies as Fanshawe won the match in straight sets 3-0 by scores of 25-14, 25-11 and 25-12.
Kelsey Watson (Barrie) led the Grizzlies in scoring with a team-high eight points in the contest.
The loss ends the Grizzlies season as the Falcons will move on to the 2019 OCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship hosted by Cambrian College.
