'March comes in like a wet lion': Environment Canada
march 1 2017
February 28, 2017 sunrise over Kempenfelt Bay. February went out like a lamb and it looks like March is coming in as a wet lion. But the first day of the new month will be mild with a double digit high of 11. Sue Sgambati/BarrieToday

A special weather statement is in effect.

Periods of rain today, fog patches dissipating this morning and the high 11.

Tonight, big swing in temps and conditions.

Periods of rain changing to flurries this evening, risk of freezing rain, local blowing snow overnight, about 2 to 4 cm. Overnight low minus 10.

A few flurries ending Thursday morning then a mix of sun and cloud, the high minus 5.

Here are the details of the special weather statement issued by Environment Canada:

4:39 AM EST Wednesday 01 March 2017

Special weather statement in effect for:

  • Barrie - Collingwood - Hillsdale
  • Midland - Coldwater - Orr Lake
  • Orillia - Lagoon City - Washago

March comes in like a wet lion.

Areas of rain have arrived as expected as a strong Colorado low tracks across the region later today. Most locales will receive a total of 15 to 25 mm of rain. The ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rain due to recent rains and snowmelt. Local flooding may be an issue in poorly drained areas.

The rain will change to snow late this afternoon or this evening as much colder air arrives from the north in the wake of the Colorado low. Brief freezing rain is possible as the rain changes over to snow.

Snowfall amounts will vary from a coating to a couple cm over southern parts, to 5 to 10 cm over northern parts by Thursday morning.

Motorists should be prepared for poor winter driving conditions which will develop quickly tonight. Untreated roads may become icy and snow covered, and quite slippery as a result.
