Richard Strikwerda has picked up about one million pieces of litter in Barrie- literally.

For decades the Barrie man has made it his mission to clean up green spaces in the city.

And now the city has formally said thank you.

Strikwerda was recognized at Monday night's council meeting for his efforts with a certificate and an orchid.

He gave council a snapshot of the trash he has collected over the years.

"Cigarettes butts of course. There are tons of them around. Paper cups, straws, cans bottles broken glass, diapers even, needles also tires - as well as something people might not believe - a box spring and mattress right in the city of Barrie," he said.

Strikwerda encouraged everyone to take up the cause that not only keeps Barrie beautiful.

"It gives you exercise and fresh air," he said.
