Highway overpass beginning to take shape with girder placement

Several girders have already been installed as part of the Harvie-Big Bay Point overpass project, with more to come tonight

The span across Highway 400 from Harvie Road to Big Bay Point Road on the east side is beginning to fall into place.

Several girders are now in place over the highway as part of the bridge project, which is located between the Essa Road and Mapleview Drive exits in the city's south end.

There are 26 girders to be installed, each being two metres high and about 45 metres long. Thirteen of the girders will span each of the northbound lanes and the southbound lanes.

This evening, there are several trucks parked on the side of the highway hauling the long girders, which are set to be put in place overnight.

Lane reductions are also in place in both directions.

The highway will be closed for 15-minute intervals tonight from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m., and again on Thursday night.

The $45-million project is expected to reduce traffic congestion in the Essa Road and Mapleview Drive areas, as well as support growth in Barrie's south end.

The crossing is expected to open this fall.
