The Mayor’s Business Breakfast welcomed more than 100 attendees to Friday Harbour Resort in the Town of Innisfil on Sept. 18.

Local business leaders, students and dignitaries gathered to network and learn about strategic developments affecting Innisfil’s business community.

The event began with remarks from Mayor Lynn Dollin, followed by an exclusive economic update by RBC economist Carrie Freestone.

“I’m so glad to see representatives from businesses small and large — from those in our DMZ start-up community to major employers — in attendance at the event,” says Dollin. “Since the last Mayor’s Breakfast, there’s been an incredible amount of progress on town-led projects and initiatives, including the launch of the town’s economic development strategic plan.”

The economic development strategic plan is guided by five principal goals: fostering innovation, improving investment readiness, enhancing tourism and culture, strengthening community assets, and developing a premier economic development office.

Approximately half of the planned 60 actions have been initiated within the first year.

Mayor Dollin shared that work continues to prepare the provincially designated employment area of Innisfil Heights for investment and the new direction of DMZ Innisfil is poised to better support local entrepreneurs. In the most recent cohort, the DMZ Innisfil program supported the creation and growth of more than 80 local start-ups with approximately 386 jobs.

“All of this work will ensure we have a strong foundation as we build up local business opportunities and tourism,” says Dollin. “This council thanks each member of the business community for their role in Innisfil’s economy. Your dedication, perseverance and collaboration are what makes Innisfil such a great place to start and grow a business.”

In addition to creating and attracting new business, there is a renewed emphasis on helping existing businesses through the Innisfil business retention and expansion project. The initiative, which rolled out this spring, includes a new ‘Shop Local’ campaign, local business success stories, job fairs, and business support workshops.

This fall, the town’s economic development team will host several key events, including Emerging Entrepreneurs on Oct. 7 and the annual Business Showcase on Nov. 18.
