Innisfil’s population grew by 18.5% in last five years: StatsCan

From 2016 to 2021, Innisfil's population grew by 18.5 per cent from 36,566 to 43,326 — representing a population density of 165.1 people per square kilometre.

The average age of the population is 41.3, and there are slightly more men in town than women living in town, with 21,775 males recorded and 21,550 females. 

Of Innisfil's 43,326 residents, 17.4 per cent are between the ages of zero and 14, 65.8 per cent are between the ages of 15 and 64, and 16.8 per cent are 65 and older. 

Innisfil saw 535 new immigrants between 2016 and 2021. That was a decrease over the previous five years — there were 700 new immigrants between 2011 and 2015.

"In 2021, more than 8.3 million people, or almost one-quarter (23 per cent) of the population, were or had ever been, a landed immigrant or permanent resident in Canada. This was the largest proportion since Confederation, topping the previous 1921 record of 22.3 per cent and the highest among the G7," Stats Canada said in a news release. 

Of the 43,200 residents who participated in the latest census, 8,465 are immigrants or 19.6 per cent of the total population. 

“Given that the population of Canada continues to age and fertility is below the population replacement level, today immigration is the main driver of population growth," says StatsCan. "If these trends continue, based on Statistics Canada's recent population projections, immigrants could represent from 29.1 per cent to 34 per cent of the population of Canada by 2041."

Of the 8,465 immigrants in Innisfil, 4,300 came from Europe, 2,115 from Asia, 1,645 from the Americas, 375 from Africa, and 30 from Oceania and other places. 

The majority of the immigrants in Innisfil have come from the United Kingdom (965), followed by Italy (625), Portugal (590), and the Russian Federation (385). 

Barrie-Innisfil saw a 10.1 per cent population increase from 2016 to 2021 with the total population sitting at 120,378 and a population density of 364. The average age of an Innisfil resident is 39.7 

Of the 119,275 residents who responded to the census in Barrie-Innisfil, 23,050 are immigrants or 19.3 per cent of the total population. 

In Simcoe County, the population increased by 11.2 per cent between 2016 and 2021 to 533,169 with a population density of 110.6 per square kilometre. The average age of a Simcoe County resident is 42.6. 

Of the 525,085 residents who responded to the census, 82,290 are immigrants or 15.6 per cent of the total population.
