Innisfil will elect its next council using the ward boundaries in place today, but that might change after 2022.
On Aug. 12, council received a report about a ward boundary review, something the previous council asked staff to look into.
The last time the town’s ward boundaries were updated was 2009.
While the previous council directed staff to investigate a boundary review after the 2018 election, staff now say the anticipated growth in some wards didn’t happen, so a boundary review at this time would be premature.
Currently, the electoral population sits at 27,598, with the average ward ideally consisting of 3,943 constituents.
Town staff say more development is expected in town, especially near the Mobility Orbit planned near the future 6th Line GO train station.
“Staff has reviewed the current population and projected numbers over the last few years and is anticipating certain ward populations to change significantly between 2022 and 2025,” a report to council stated.
Council voted in favour of staff’s recommendation to use the current ward boundaries for another election cycle and for staff to report back after the 2022 election in anticipation of the 2026 election.
