The County of Simcoe economic development office is pleased to host another edition of its Ask an Expert series on Tuesday, July 9 at 1:30 p.m.

Join Jarrod Hicks, director of intellectual property for Intellectual Property Ontario (IPON), to learn about the importance of intellectual property, how to budget properly, and learn more about IPON services and resources.

In this session, participants can expect to:

  • Learn about the different types of intellectual property, including trademarks, copyrights and patents and the crucial role they play in protecting innovations and providing a competitive advantage.
  • Discuss strategies for developing and controlling an effective intellectual property budget.
  • Explore IPON’s offerings, which include foundational intellectual property education, public events, tailored services to help innovators, funding, and mentorship.

About the speaker

Jarrod enjoys working with startups and scale-ups. Each company has its own strengths and challenges, and he relishes the opportunity to help them succeed along their individual journeys. He has experience in numerous divergent technologies, including cloud computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and neural computing. Prior to joining IPON, he thrived in IP procurement and prosecution representing several multinational companies in Silicon Valley. He holds bachelor’s degrees in chemical engineering and mathematics and obtained his JD from Santa Clara University. He has been a registered U.S. patent lawyer for over 15 years.
