Richard is a long-term care resident, who came to the IOOF and “right away felt spoiled and after I got used to my wheelchair, I was able to meet a lot of people and now everyone knows who I am.”
One of Richard’s favourite things at the IOOF is getting to know his fellow residents and making a meaningful connection every day.
“Inside all these people is a real person, and everything that I’ve done in my life has come for a purpose.”
As treasurer of the residents’ council, Richard’s role is focused on being “a voice for those who don’t have one” and providing insights on behalf of the residents — a skill he learned from 37 years as a financial adviser with his own practice. Father of six children, and a love for motorcycles in his youth, he returned to riding when his 16-year-old son got his licence, and together they went on to participate in charity rides. This summer, Richard joined the IOOF at Barrie Harley-Davidson as resident ambassador for the annual Young at Heart Charity Motorcycle Ride.
The IOOF is thankful for the support from the community, and similar to Canadian hospitals, as a not-for-profit long-term care home is required to raise community dollars to help their redevelopment construction costs and for the purchase of vital equipment to support resident care and program needs.
Support the IOOF Seniors Homes this holiday season and help ensure they can continue building the future of senior care.

Redevelopment project
The IOOF has embarked on a historical redevelopment project to expand their long-term care facility located at 10 Brooks St. in Barrie. The project will create 64 new long-term care beds and 66 upgraded beds and when completed the long-term care home will be a 226-bed facility.
As a not-for-profit long-term care home, the IOOF is eligible for capital construction funding from the Ministry of Long-Term Care to supplement redevelopment costs. The IOOF has submitted construction drawings to the Ministry of Long-Term Care, which have been approved, and they hope to begin construction in the coming months. The project will be completed in two phases and is expected to conclude by early 2027, when they can welcome new residents to the redeveloped long-term care home.
