'It's all gone now,' says distraught relative of crash victims

Three GoFundMe pages have been set up to assist with funeral costs for the victims in last Friday's fatal crash in Bradford

It’s been one week since the horrific crash that killed a young boy, his father and grandmother. Family and friends are still trying to come to grips with the nightmarish aftermath.

The driver of the SUV, 36-year-old Kyle Cobet, crossed the centre line while heading northbound on Yonge Street in Bradford last Friday (Sept. 20) when it collided with a transport truck driving in the southbound lane.

Cobet was known as a loving father to his nine-year-old son, Christian Nunes. His sister, Shannon Cobet, who lives in Barrie, is devastated.

“I lost my mother, my only brother and my nephew,” she sobbed.

She says she first heard about the accident on the news, and immediately had a bad feeling about it.

“When I heard it briefly on the news when we were driving with my fiance, I said that’s my brother and my mom and Christian. I just had a gut feeling,” she said.

The three family members had been driving back to Barrie to drop off Kyle’s mother, 60-year-old Wendy Cobet, after staying with him and Christian at their Newmarket home for the last few weeks, said Shannon.

“It’s just a bad dream and I am going to wake up tomorrow and it’s going to be gone,” she said of the aftermath.

She said she raised Kyle until he was 17. They are seven years apart, but were very close.

“Thick as thieves,” she described.

“We were a very tight-knit family. Christmases at my mom’s, everybody crammed in her apartment opening gifts, and Christian shooting his Nerf guns all over the place and dinner ... and it’s all gone now,” she cried.

“My eyes are swollen. I haven’t been able to eat or sleep.”

The family is trying to finalize arrangements for the funerals, which will be held in Newmarket. Details are still waiting to be confirmed.

In the meantime, there have been a few GoFundMe pages set up by the friends and families of the victims.

Gail Briscoe, a family friend of Christian’s grandparents, Debra and Larry Nunes, has set up a GoFundMe page to help with the funeral costs for the boy.

The organizer of the fundraiser would like the public to know all funds raised go directly to the accounts of Christian’s grandparents. Donations can be made on the page here.

Meaghan Davies, the sister of Kyle Cobet’s fiance, Courtney Davies, has set up her own page to raise money for funeral arrangements for Kyle and Christian here.

Friends of Wendy Cobet have also created a GoFundMe page to support the costs of the funeral here.
