The competition was fierce and the battles hard won at Georgian’s inaugural FIRST Robotics FIRST STEAMWORKS games – Barrie’s largest robotics competition to date – held at the Barrie Campus over the weekend.
A total of 34 teams made up of high school students from all across Ontario had only 45 days to design, prototype, build, program and test their robots. They were judged on teamwork, engineering excellence, entrepreneurial spirit, as well as specific tasks their robots were required to complete during the competition.
In the end, the two Simcoe County Teams both took home awards. Javawockies won the Rookie All Star Award and Cybernomes captain Cassidy Morgan won FIRST Dean's List Award.
The overall winning alliance was comprised of three teams: Chingrobotics of Brampton, Rebels of Georgetown and Celt-X of Hannon, near Hamilton.
“This weekend was an opportunity to showcase the brilliance of our future innovation leaders through exciting competitions. After experiencing our state-of-the-art robotics, electrical and computer labs, some of these students may choose to attend Georgian College in the future,” said Lisa Banks, Vice President, External Relations. “We look forward to hosting another great event next year.”
Georgian partnered with FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an international not-for-profit organization, to host the competition Mar. 25 and 26.
Georgian’s event is one of nine competitions to take place across Ontario this year. The winning teams now move on to provincial championships in April at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, where they will fight for a spot at the FRC World Championship in St. Louis, Missouri.
