Barrie native rocks in Kitchener Rangers crease

Luke Richardson, who played for the North Central Predators, has allowed only three goals in two games

Barrie native Luke Richardson led the way.

The Kitchener Rangers goaltender stopped 31 shots Friday night and the Blueshirts bopped the Ottawa 67’s, 5-1.

“I know we scored five goals,” said Rangers head coach Jay McKee. “But, he was the player of the game. He was like a wall. He came up with some big saves.

"The goal, he’d probably like to have back, but he was great for us again," the coach added.

Richardson, who played his minor-midget year with the 'AAA' North Central Predators, has only allowed three goals over two games and has a .947 save percentage.

His biggest save of the young year came in the third period Friday in the form of absolute larceny of the 67’s Kody Clark.

“The first save, I just got my pad down and saw the puck go right to the guy,” said Richardson. “I tried to get a strong push across and get my glove in front of it.”

Richardson was named first star of the game. The 19-year-old is in his fourth year with the Rangers.

Waterloo native Chase Campbell and Jonathan Yantsis both had two points in Friday’s win.

It was Campbell’s first game as a Ranger since coming over from the Owen Sound Attack.

The Rangers embark on their first road trip of the season Saturday when they head to Windsor to face the Spitfires and former Kitchener first-round pick Grayson Ladd.
