NEWS RELEASE
SIMCOE COUNTY 4 PALESTINE
***********************
Simcoe County 4 Palestine welcomes one and all to the Simcoe County Kite Flight in Solidarity with Gaza. Community members are invited to this family-friendly event to raise awareness and honour the children of Gaza.

When: Saturday, July 20, 2024; 1:30-4:30 p.m.
Where: Will Dwyer Park, 81 Lakeshore Dr., Barrie

The kite has long been a symbol of defiance and hope for the people of Palestine. It broadcasts an unmistakable message of freedom flying high, often in the colours of the Palestinian flag.

In 2011, the children of Gaza broke the world record for most kites flown in a single group, flying 12,350 kites at Al-Waha beach. This was a demonstration of their resilience at a time when Gaza was under harsh blockade.

Over the past eight months, the kite has continued to be a powerful symbol of freedom and resistance.

Free kite kits will be offered to be decorated and flown, and attendees are welcome to bring their own kite from home. Drinks and baked goods will be offered, community members are encouraged to bring lunch and stay for a picnic.

This event is in partnership with other local organizations: Jewish Alliance of Simcoe, Barrie Mosque, Christians for Just Peace Barrie, and Food Not Bombs Barrie.

Local artist Nicholai Melamed will be offering portrait drawings — by a suggested $10 donation to Simcoe County 4 Palestine to continue with organizing and advocacy efforts.
