NEWS RELEASE
SIMCOE COUNTY DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
*************************
As part of a commitment to supporting equity, diversity and inclusion in schools, in November the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) will host a student equity conference. On Nov. 9 and 14, Grade 7 to 10 students from Barrie, north Simcoe, the Orillia area and the Simcoe Alternative Secondary School will attend the conference, offered in partnership with Harmony Movement.
Up to 120 SCDSB students will participate in the Social Changemakers Leadership Conference, a Harmony Movement program that engages students in gaining a deeper awareness of equity-related issues, while developing their abilities to take leadership for social change.
“Students will take the information and skills they learn at the conference and use it to fuel social change in their schools and communities,” says Irfan Toor, SCDSB Principal of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. “One of the activities students will participate in is development of an action plan for improving school climate that they can implement in their own school community.”
The conferences are on Nov. 9 and 14 at the SCDSB Education Centre, 1170 Hwy 26, Midhurst, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. The SCDSB Student Equity Conference is offered to students from schools across Simcoe County every other year, on a rotating basis.
