'Major' gas leak in Orillia

The Orillia fire department is currently on scene of a major gas leak in the downtown area tonight.

According to the Orillia Fire Department's Twitter feed reported shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday that the fire department, Ontario Provincial Police, Union Gas and Orillia Power are all currently on scene.

"Time needed to make area safe," the tweet reads.

Orillia Mayor Steve Clarke tweeted "Gas leak downtown. Electricity stays off until leak repaired. Crews on site! Avoid west end of downtown. Treat stop lights as all-way stops."

The Ontario Provincial Police released the following statement via Twitter:

"There is a major gas leak in the downtown area of Orillia, which is causing significant power outages throughout the city. The OPP is advising residents to avoid the area if possible and to treat any traffic lights that are out and/or blinking as a four way stop."

The OPP also advises that West St. is closed between Colborne St. and Mississaga St. Mississaga St. is closed between Albert St. and West St. Colborne St. is closed between Andrew St. and Albert St. while Albert St. is closed between Colborne St. and Mississaga St.
