Man accused of murdering Katherine Janeiro in 1994 makes brief court appearance

Robert Bruce MacQueen, who is also known as 'Bruce Ellis', scheduled to be back in court Jan. 28

The man charged with murder in the 1994 stabbing death of Katherine Janeiro made a brief appearance in a Barrie courtroom this morning.

Robert Bruce MacQueen, 58, is charged with first-degree murder in relation to the 20-year-old Barrie woman's death at her Dunlop Street apartment. MacQueen also faces a charge of driving while disqualified from an incident on Aug. 8, 2020.

On Thursday morning, MacQueen told the presiding judge he didn’t have a lawyer yet, "but should by the end of the day.”

MacQueen is scheduled to be back in court via video remand on Thursday, Jan. 28.

MacQueen, who is also known as 'Bruce Ellis', was arrested Jan. 13 in the city's south end.

Police have said the arrest came following a tip received in 2019.

On Oct. 10, 1994, Janeiro’s body was found in a pool of blood in her home at the Dunlop Apartments, located at 258 Dunlop St. W., near Anne Street.

Janeiro had a two-year-old daughter, but the little girl was not at the home at the time of her mother's death because she was visiting her grandparents.

In 1994, Barrie police began an investigation with assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police's Forensic Identification Bureau.

The case was turned over to the OPP in October 1999 in order to use investigative techniques not available to city police at the time.

In February 2012, the investigation was turned back over to city police.
