Man in critical condition at Toronto-area hospital after yesterday's basement fire

Cause of Wednesday's blaze is still under investigation, says official with the Office of the Fire Marshal

A man who had to be revived after a Wednesday morning fire in Barrie remains in critical condition at a Toronto-area trauma centre.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday that while he wasn’t aware of the man’s condition as of late this morning, he said the man “was suffering from serious injuries that would definitely be considered critical.”

Emergency crews responded to a basement fire in west-end Barrie yesterday to find one man without vital signs.

Deputy Chief Carrie Clark said when crews arrived at 19 Mowat Cres., just before 8:30 a.m., they had to revive the victim.

“When crews got there, the man was VSA (vital signs absent), but they were able to return a pulse and he was transported to RVH (Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre),” Clark said Wednesday.

The fire was contained to the basement of the multi-unit residential home. Four tenants in the upper level were able to get out of the structure.

Inspectors from the province's Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) told BarrieToday this morning that it was “still too early to determine a cause,” or the monetary damage to the home.
