For the first time, South Simcoe Police have laid manslaughter charges in connection with a fentanyl overdose.

"The opioid crisis in our country has reached epidemic proportions", said South Simcoe Police Deputy Chief Robin McElary-Downer.

"(Alleged) drug dealers must be held accountable for their actions if we're going to make a difference. We hope this is the first step in making a change."

A 23-year-old Innisfil man was found dead of an apparent overdose on April 10.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Bureau of the South Simcoe Police Service began an investigation.

Search warrants were obtained and two Innisfil men, aged 23 and 55, were arrested and charged with trafficking in fentanyl and heroin.

Toxicology results later confirmed that fentanyl and heroin were the drugs that caused the victim's overdose.

Both men were re-arrested Wednesday and charged with manslaughter.

They have been held in custody for a bail hearing.
