The growing global movement of Men’s Sheds may touch down in Barrie if an upcoming information session garners sufficient interest. A public meeting to gauge local interest is taking place on June 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch is included.

The town-hall session is hosted by Catholic Family Services of Simcoe County (CFSSC) at its accessible location at 20 Anne St. S. There is no cost to participate. While all are invited to the morning session, the afternoon session is reserved for men interested in the popular initiative. Pre-registration is required.

Men’s Sheds provide “friendly, inclusive, and creative spaces where men of purpose can gather,” according to the Canadian Men’s Sheds Association. Although not all sheds are the same, they usually involve a workspace for those who don’t have one or have had to give theirs up. The movement started in Australia 15 years ago and made its way to Winnipeg a few years later. Hundreds of sheds and thousands of shedders are now established worldwide. While there are now several sheds in Ontario, none have been established in Simcoe County or Muskoka so far.

“Our MatureMinds program is all about making healthy community connections, and Men’s Sheds have repeatedly proven to have an approach that works,” said CFSSC program manager Amanda Fellows. “We’re pleased to have this opportunity to introduce the peer-run concept to this area.”

For more information about Saturday’s session or to register, email [email protected] or call at 705-726-2503, ext. 140.
