Museum's outdoor skating trail back for another year

'It gets them outside for fresh air, especially on a day like today where it is a little chilly, but it’s just beautiful out'

The Simcoe County Museum skating trail is now open and saw many people take a glide on a brisk Saturday.

The one-kilometre trail opened at the Midhurst facility on Saturday, winding its way through the grounds of the museum, passing through the forest paths and by many of the heritage buildings.

Emily Parker, the museum’s skating trail program guide, took a skate of her own to open the trail. She tells BarrieToday it is perfect and ready for everyone.

“We opened at 11 a.m., and it has been great so far and we’ve had quite a few groups out,” said Parker. “I took a lap around today and it was just a perfect day for it with the weather, but also the scenery is so beautiful.”

This is the second year the trail has been open.

It has been popular with people looking to change up their skating routine.

Deborah Broekema, her husband, Jasper, and their two children, James and Andrew, came out Saturday for the first time to give the boys a change of scenery.

“It gives the kids the opportunity to skate a trail out in the woods and change it up a bit from the local rinks,” said Broekema. “It gets them outside for fresh air, especially on a day like today where it is a little chilly, but it’s just beautiful out.”

Skating trail hours, weather permitting, are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 6-9 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The cost varies and all information is available at www.museum.simcoe.ca.
