New pastry house a sweet treat for downtown Barrie

'We do all of our laminated (rolled in butter) doughs, like our croissants, puff pantries, danishes, from scratch, which a lot of people don’t do anymore,' says head pastry chef

Butter Bay Pastry House had its official opening in downtown Barrie on Saturday morning, almost two weeks after its soft opening.

Owner and head pastry chef Sarah Mahoney said its pastry is the real thing.

“We do all of our laminated (rolled in butter) doughs, like our croissants, puff pantries, danishes, from scratch, which a lot of people don’t do anymore because the laminated doughs are quite time consuming,” she said, “but the chefs and I have a good system back there that we get everyone out some fresh pastries every day.”

Her team is comprised of Georgian College trained pastry chefs.

Aside from a wide array of croissants, danishes and puff pastries, Butter Bay Pastry House offers pan-pizza slices, quiches, muffins, cookies, artisan coffee, teas and specialty drinks.

Products also have a big emphasis on seasonally inspired ingredients.

“We have vibrant colours in all of our products. We’re very seasonally inspired,” said Mahoney. “It’s just a nice atmosphere to come to enjoy a buttery, delicious pastry.”

Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte MP Doug Shipley and Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall were on hand for the official opening and ribbon cutting.

Butter Bay Pastry House is located on the ground floor of the new Lakhouse Lakefront Residences on Dunlop Street East.
