Occupants escape home following south-end fire (6 photos)

Five people taken to hospital as a precaution, acting platoon chief says at the scene

A fire Monday night in south-end Barrie caused extensive damage, but thankfully no serious injuries.

Barrie firefighters were called out before 9 p.m. to a house fire on Country Lane, near Mapleview Drive East.

"It came in as a working fire in the garage with extension into house," Acting Platoon Chief Jason Smith told BarrieToday at the scene, adding the damage is "going to be extensive.

"Once it leaves one compartment and goes into another, it's going to be significant," he added.

Smith said he hadn't been inside the structure and it was too early to say if anything could be salvaged.

Crews from the Big Bay Point Road fire station were the first on scene before more firefighters were called out.

"There was a large volume of fire in the garge, working its way right out into the second floor," Smith said. "They did a great job knocking it down initially.

"There was a good column of smoke and I could see it from Yonge Street," he added.

There were six people inside the home. Five of them were taken to hospital as a precaution, Smith said.

Another person was not at home at the time of the blaze, he said, adding he believes it may be a rented house.

At its height, there were five trucks on scene and 22 firefighters.

The fire created stability issues with the house.

"It looked like the garage was going to lean over, so we stayed clear of that," Smith said.

A fire investigator was on their way to the scene to determine the cause.

Smith expected crews to remain on scene until about midnight.
