Open Air Dunlop returns with fun, food and festival

Plenty for people of all ages to do Saturday in downtown Barrie

Open Air Dunlop is back again this Saturday and there’s so much happening in downtown Barrie.

The big event will be this year’s free Troubadour Festival, taking place at three locations in the heart of downtown Barrie. Recent Grammy winner (Best Latin Pop Album) Alex Cuba headlines the Meridian Place stage at 8 p.m. Live music begins at 9 a.m. at the Homestead Cafe, along with daytime performances at the Muskoka Brewery Beer Garden, and then the main stage kicks off at 5 p.m.

Dunlop Street will be closed to cars from Maple Avenue to Mulcaster Street to make way for community. There’s lot of fun planned all day long, including:

  • 8 a.m. — Free yoga class with True You Studio. Meet in Meridian Place.
  • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Visit the Barrie Farmers’ Market at city hall. Spring produce such as lettuce, scapes, and early berries are in season.
  • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Free art activity. Play with clay and make a mini pinch pot with Days Eye Ceramics. Find Heather in Meridian Place.
  • 9 a.m. — Troubadour Festival kicks off. Enjoy music at Homestead Cafe including HarpAcash, Julianna Jones, Michael Costantini, JD Crosstown, James Gray, Zachary Lucky, Josh Bogert and a Songwriters workshop with Danny Michel and Lindy Vopnfjörð.
  • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Forgather Flower Stall pop-up outside of Bohemia. Pick your own bouquet.
  • 10 a.m. — Free yoga class and drum circle with Nook Yoga at Meridian Place.
  • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Free life drawing featuring a live model with Drawing House in Meridian Place. Drop by and try your hand at sketching.
  • 11 a.m. — Help us celebrate the Fab Tray Project. The alleyway between CIBC and P_ZZA has been brightened and beautified by 16 local artists, taking inspiration from the Fab Trays, which were handcrafted in Barrie in the ’60s and ’70s. Stop by and meet the artists.
  • 12 p.m. — The Troubadour Festival beer garden begins at Meridian Place. Enjoy cold beer, delicious eats from Jimmy Chew’s pizza, and great music, including James Gray, JD Crosstown, Rebekah Hawker, B Knox and Josh Bogert.
  • 12 to 4 p.m. — Free art activity. Make a mini fab tray with Jenn from Art with Purpose. Across from the Fab Tray Alleyway, near Meridian Place.
  • 12 to 4 p.m. — Pollinator parade and Maple Mews planting. Pollinate Barrie and the MacLaren Art Centre are teaming with downtown Barrie to adopt planters on Maple Avenue and plant them with native perennial plants that’ll create a pollinator oasis. Drop by to see good things growing.
  • 1 p.m. — Free Pilates class in Meridian Place with Jim from Namaste North.
  • 1 to 5 p.m. — Teachings, storytelling and song at the Barrie Public Library. Elder Jeff Monague will share knowledge of Seven Grandfather Teachings followed by music with regional Indigenous musicians.
  • 4 p.m. — Free dance class in Meridian Place with Uptempo Dance Studio.
  • 4 p.m. — Free historic walking tour with Mary Harris of the Barrie Historical Archive. Summertime in the city from years gone by. Meet in Meridian Place at the top of the square.
  • 5 p.m. — Music starts on the main stage for Troubadour Festival featuring Sammy and Band, Delyn Grey, Logan Staats and Alex Cuba headlining.
  • 8 p.m. — Barrie Pride Glow in the Dark bike ride. Gather at the rainbow crosswalk and decorate your bike. Get your glow on and join a waterfront trail ride. Ride starts at 9 p.m.
