OPP investigators were called to the Simcoe County Forest north of Midhurst Wednesday after the discovery of human remains.
"A person was walking their dog and made the discovery shortly after noon," said OPP Sgt. Peter Leon.
The remains were found in the woods slightly off a trail often used by hikers and dog walkers, Leon said.
Criminal Investigation Branch Det. Insp. Dave Robinson surveyed the scene along with detectives from Huronia West OPP.
A coroner also attended the scene located on the east side of Gill Road at the end of a long, ice-covered driveway.
Police could not comment on a possible identity, age or gender.
There is also no indication yet on how long the remains may have been in the woods.
Leon said the remains would be removed at some point to the Office of the Chief Coroner in Toronto where an autopsy would be performed.
Police secured the scene and said an intensive search of the area would be done Thursday.
