TOWNSHIP OF ORO-MEDONTE

In partnership with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Township of Oro-Medonte traffic safety advisory committee (TSAC) has launched a township-wide crowd-sourced ‘Slow Down For Us’ awareness campaign, focused on speed reduction, through the use of a digital social media filter across Meta platforms (i.e., Instagram and Facebook).

The primary goal of the campaign is to change driver behaviour through showcasing the impact of speeding on the community.

All township residents are encouraged to use the ‘Slow Down For Us’ filter found on the township’s Instagram profile, and take a photo with a personal message or create a video, and share the filter on their own social media platforms, including Facebook, using hashtag #slowdownforus. Participants of the campaign have the option to submit photos or videos directly to the township by visiting traffic safety advisory committee | Township of Oro-Medonte. Township staff will create a collage of images submitted and promote/share through the township’s social media channels.

Additionally, campaign participants are encouraged and reminded to tag the township in their social media posts. Tagged messages will be shared on township social media channel stories. Please tag facebook.com/OroMedonte and instagram.com/oromedontetwp.

On behalf of Coun. David Clark, chair of the TSAC, committee members, members of council, and township staff, Mayor Randy Greenlaw commented that “initiation of the Slow Down For Us campaign is a key area of focus for the TSAC, and a priority of Oro-Medonte council. We are very pleased to partner with the OPP on this extremely important initiative, and grateful for their support. With participation from the Oro-Medonte community while working in collaboration with the OPP, together, we will raise awareness about the critical importance of responsible driving habits, and prioritizing safety over speed. I personally encourage all Oro-Medonte residents to be active participants in the campaign and thank you for taking part.”

Insp. Coyer Yateman, detachment commander, Orillia detachment, Ontario Provincial Police, commented that “a priority at the Orillia OPP detachment is road safety in the communities and on the highways that we serve. We are dedicated to enforcing traffic laws and educating the community to help reduce accidents and save lives. Our members are excited to partner with the Township of Oro-Medonte traffic safety advisory committee to raise awareness about the importance of reducing speed through the Slow Down For Us campaign. Together, we’re working to identify local issues and find solutions to make our streets safer for everyone.”

Details regarding the campaign, including how to submit photos and videos through the township’s website, can be found by visiting traffic safety advisory committee | Township of Oro-Medonte.
