Police probe suspicious fire at abandoned water park (4 photos)

It took 25 firefighters 30 minutes to bring the fire under control

A suspicious fire at the abandoned Splash Canyon Water Park Saturday night has the Ontario Provincial Police investigating the cause.

Shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday, Springwater Fire and Emergency Services responded to a reported structure fire at Splash Canyon Water Park on Nursery Road.

Midhurst Station 2 and Minesing Station 3 responded to the fire while tankers from Hillsdale Station 4 and Elmvale Station 5 were called in to assist with water shuttle.

Jeff French, Deputy Fire Chief of Springwater Fire & Emergency Services, said it took a lot of time and many firefighters to extinguish the stubborn blaze.

“When crews arrived, they found an abandoned building on the property fully involved,” said French.

“We went into a defensive attack, with 25 firefighters on scene to combat the fire. It took 30 minutes to bring the fire under control and there were no injuries.”

Suspicious fires at the abandoned park are not new as crews were called to a blaze in July of 2016. That time, it took 20 firefighters and 30 minutes to finally control the fire.

The provincial fire marshal's office has been notified.
