Thousands of homes and businesses lost power in Barrie early Monday morning.

Everything went black in many areas of the city shortly before 1 a.m., affecting the areas around Anne Street North and Cundles Road West.

Alectra spokesperson Janessa Famiglietti tells BarrieToday the outage originated on Edgehill Drive.

"We had an equipment failure on a customer-owned transformer box which caused the outage," Famiglietti said around noon today. "Our crews have been able to isolate the issue and restore power to almost all customers."

According to Alectra Utilities, the electricity supplier in Barrie, 8,469 homes and businesses were initially affected.

At 1:16 a.m., the utility said 3,374 homes and businesses were being impacted.

At 2:01 a.m., Alectra reported 123 customers without power in the Edgehill Drive area.

By 3 a.m., Alectra said power had been restored in Barrie.

However, there were small pockets of people in the Anne Street and Edgehill Drive area who said on social media they were still without power. Alectra officials said those were issues with customer-owned equipment and would have to be dealt with by property management.

This afternoon, Jennett Mays, a communications co-ordintator with Barrie police, said the department received several calls from people asking about the outage.

"We would like to advise the public that, in the event of a power outage, they should call their hydro utility provider to report the outage or inquire about updates, not the police," she said, adding "911 is to be used in the event of emergencies only."
