Editor's note: The following story has been updated from its original version to clarify Tuesday's funding announcement. The funding is for a new school in what the City of Barrie refers to as the "Hewitt Secondary Plan Area," not to replace Hewitt's Creek Public School on Sandringham Drive. BarrieToday regrets the error and any confusion it caused.

UPDATED

The province announced Tuesday it is providing $27.1 million for a new elementary school in the Hewitt Secondary Plan Area in south Barrie.

The new school is expected to have 616 student spaces and has a targeted opening date of 2028.

The board says it has property at the corner of Ball Gate and Thicketwood Avenue.

This new elementary school is needed to reduce pressure on the existing elementary schools in the area, including Hewitt’s Creek Public School, according to the board. It will not replace the existing Hewitt’s Creek Public School on Sandringham Drive.

“Our government is investing in new schools and improved infrastructure across the province to support the needs of Ontario’s students, families, and growing communities,” Barrie-Innisfil MPP Andrea Khanjin said in a news release.

“These are part of our historic investment of more than $190 billion over the next 10 years to build and deliver the critical infrastructure Ontarians deserve today and for future generations to come," she added.

Education Minister Jill Dunlop, who represents Simcoe North, said the province is “proud to deliver a new Hewitt’s Creek school for local families, along with increasing funding, staffing and a back-to-basics focus on reading, writing and math to help ensure students graduate with the fundamental skills they need to succeed.”
