The following statement was provided by the public affairs officer at Canadian Forces Base Borden:

On Nov. 11, we pause as a nation to honour the sacrifices made by the brave members of the Canadian Armed Forces, past and present.

Remembrance Day holds deep significance for military personnel, veterans and family members who have loved ones that serve and have served in the military.

This day reflects our shared commitment to protecting the freedoms we cherish. It also serves as a solemn reminder for all Canadians of those who have given their lives in service to Canada and to remind us of the enduring legacy of courage, duty and resilience they leave behind.

As we look to our past and remember all that our military and nation have accomplished, we must never forget the heavy price that helped usher in the peace we enjoy here in Canada today.

Throughout the history of the Canadian Armed Forces, more than 120,000 members have given their lives in service to Canada. They had futures planned, vast potential, and stories waiting to be written. They had families and friends, loved ones who cared deeply for them.

We cannot afford to forget their stories, and the meaning behind their sacrifice to help safeguard our citizens, our country, and our allies throughout the world.

We here at CFB Borden and throughout the Military Personnel Generation Training Group are at the forefront of training the next generation of sailors, soldiers and aviators. For many of the new Canadian Armed Forces members entering service, the training centres found throughout Borden and the Formation serve as their first exposure to military life and its culture.

As we undertake the reconstitution of the Canadian Armed Forces, it is vital that we never forget those that helped pave the way for us. This day reminds us that we are not alone. We stand on the shoulders of giants; those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice, and those who continue to serve in an important role on the international stage.

When we look to the past, whether examples from the World Wars or more recently, we see repeated stories of courage, dedication, resilience, teamwork and incredible examples of service.

It’s important to remember that this can also be an isolating time for many, and the need to feel connected and part of a shared community is more important than ever. If you see family, friends, or colleagues who are struggling and alone, reach out. If you yourself are struggling, reach out. Extend a helping hand and remind each other. You are not alone.

For those who have served, for those who continue to serve, and for those we’ve lost, we offer our deepest gratitude. May their courage, sacrifice, and dedication remind us always of the importance of unity, resilience and the freedoms we hold dear.

We shall remember them.
