Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) has reached another milestone in the development of an advanced cardiac program for the region’s residents.

The health centre has received approval from the provincial government to proceed to tender with prequalified vendors for construction of the advanced cardiac care centre.

“We all know someone who has been impacted by heart disease,” says Janice Skot, RVH president and CEO. “Thanks to the provincial government’s ongoing support, heart patients throughout North Simcoe Muskoka will soon have access to the gold standard of lifesaving cardiac services – treatment at a cardiac centre within 90 minutes of a heart attack. Simply put, this regional advanced cardiac program will save lives.”

RVH received approval for $9.1 million in capital funding from the provincial government last spring and there are now 33 individual projects underway to ensure readiness to deliver this specialized service, including updating and adding outpatient services to provide the latest in cardiac diagnosis and treatment tools.

“We’ve built a strong team of nine heart specialists, providing around the clock cardiology coverage, opened a regional Urgent Cardiology Clinic, invested in technology and equipment and opened the region’s only Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) and Cardiac Renal Unit,” says Dr. Brad Dibble, clinical director, Cardiac & Renal program. “We’re ready for this and it will be a game changer for patients needed these critical services.”

North Simcoe Muskoka is the only region in the province without an advanced cardiac centre and with the start of construction, by late 2017, RVH will be able to provide life-saving care for heart patients throughout the region.
