Seniors for Climate Action Now (SCAN) is hosting a special event in the Rotunda at Barrie City Hall to celebrate National Seniors’ Day on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

SCAN Barrie is joining similar groups in cities across the country with the aim of mobilizing Canadian seniors to give voice to their concerns about what is being done about our climate emergency.

“Certainly, there are a lot of concerns about health care and affordability,” says Ann Martin, co-chair of SCAN Barrie. “But these issues will only get worse with the extreme weather brought about by climate change.”

As part of the event, two excellent speakers will be making presentations designed to provide thought-provoking information and motivation to empower individuals to stand up and speak out to those who should be doing more and doing it faster – governments and corporations.

Co-ordinating and resourcing these many efforts in the country is Seniors for Climate, an active non-profit organization which has developed a web site focusing on eliminating fossil fuels, and speeding up the providing of more renewable energy sources.

As stated on the Seniors for Climate website, “we’re facing unnatural disasters – new and escalating levels of extreme heat, fires and floods. They’re caused by fossil fuel emissions. And they’re striking more often here and around the world. More people and places are hurting every day. It’s time to end the use of fossil fuels.”

As SCAN Barrie co-chair Pat Smith notes, “seniors make up one in four Canadians, and we are deeply concerned about the climate crisis and we must move quickly if we are to have a livable environment in the future.”

Both Anne and Pat emphasize that seniors have more power than they realize to bring about change. Seniors have numbers, the time to put to the effort, and they vote.

SCAN invites people of all ages to the event in the Barrie City Hall Rotunda on Tuesday, Oct. 1 from 2-4 p.m., followed by a march to Meridian Place, upper level on Dunlop Street.

SCAN can be reached by emailing Anne Martin at [email protected] or Pat Smith email at [email protected].
