In recognition of Black History Month, Making Change is excited to announce the group exhibition, Canvas for Change: Black Youth Art Showcase, highlighting the art created by 11 youths who have been selected to participate in the art program, Canvas for Change.

This program was geared to high school students from across Simcoe County who have a Black-lived experience.

Under the guidance of Toronto-based artist mentor Ashante Blackwood, three youth workshops were hosted in January on conceptualizing, communicating, and visually representing ideas unique to their own stories and perspectives.

“My art is a reflection of my daily struggles and successes of being a Black woman in today’s society,” explains Ashante.

This group exhibition is an opportunity to highlight the accomplishments of aspiring young artists, to spark conversation, and to draw attention to the rich visual arts culture and talent among young people in Simcoe County.

The exhibiting artists are Joanna Ajima, Saleisha Danquah, Simaya Duncan, Kezra Hill, Yazmine Kamara, Markus McKie, Celena Mulcare, David Moseri, Queensleasor Nabuin, Willow Peart and Nevaeh Thomas.

Making Change has partnered with the MacLaren Art Centre, Shak’s World Community Centre, and Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library to host the Canvas for Change program fostering the creation of unique artworks as part of a travelling group exhibition at these locations:

Feb. 1 to 11: Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library
