Social paddling season kicks off in Barrie

Weekly free community event a summer tradition

With summer-like temps in the forecast, it's fitting the stand up paddle board social season is officially underway in Barrie.

About 20 excited paddlers hit the bue waters of Kempenfelt Bay off Centennial Beach Wednesday evening to launch what's been a free, weekly community event at the waterfront for seven years.

Northern Stand Up Paddle (SUP), Barrie's own paddle board company, invites all paddlers to join in for the social and 90-minute training session held Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

"The whole idea is to get people out. Learn a little bit about the sport and have some fun on the water. As long as you have your own equipment, it's free," said Northern SUP founder Brent Ackland, PaddleFit® director of education and Pro Certified coach who guides the Wednesday event.

When the session is done, paddlers head across the road to PIE restaurant for pizza and more socializing.

Up to 30 people will gather every week and hit the Bay accompanied by several instructors.

Ackland also runs the stand up board rental and lessons at Centennial Beach.

Life jacket and a whistle are mandatory while stand up paddling or face a $250 fine.
