NEWS RELEASE
CITY OF BARRIE
*************************
The City of Barrie’s organics (green bin) program is a great way to help reduce the amount of waste thrown out in your household, and it’s also vital to extending the life of the Barrie landfill.
But, let’s be honest — we all know it can get a bit more challenging in the summer as the temperature heats up. Bugs and odour can become an issue, but don’t let it stop you!
Here are some tips to keep your green bin happy in the summertime:
- Line the bottom of your bin with crumpled newspaper, boxboard, fibre, egg cartons, large paper bags, take out trays or certified compostable liners/bags with this symbol.
- Wrap food waste in newspaper, boxboard or certified compostable liners/bags before placing in the bin.
- To keep maggots away, clean your green bin regularly.
- Empty the small kitchen bin into the large curbside bin often, before food scraps have a chance to start decomposing.
- Freeze or refrigerate food scraps in acceptable bin liners before placing in the curbside bin on your collection day.
- Keep the lid on your organics bin tightly closed (make sure the latch snaps shut).
- Place your organics bin out for collection every week on your scheduled collection day, even if it’s only partially full.
Remember:
- ALL food waste can go in your green bin, plus tissues, paper towels, paper cups, house plants and dryer lint—just no plastic material, yard waste or pet waste. Use the LookUp Tool if you need help figuring out where items go for disposal.
- Residential households receive unlimited collection of organics bins and recycling boxes every week, but curbside organics bins can’t exceed 20 kgs. (45 lbs.) each.
- If you include any unacceptable items in your green bin, your bin will not be emptied and a sticker will be left to let you know the reason.
- If you need a bin, Barrie residents can pick up green bins and recycling boxes at one of the City’s Rec Centres or at City Hall during regular operating hours. Proof of address is required.
