The province is providing $2.8 million to build a new child-care centre and an EarlyON Child and Family Centre at a French-language school in south-end Barrie.

La Source elementary school, located at Madelaine Drive and Dean Avenue, is part of the Viamonde school board.

Construction of the new addition is already underway. The new child-care rooms are expected to open in September 2022.

The local MPP says this announcement is part of Ontario's efforts to build and improve local schools, adding the project is part of the province’s capital investment program to build more child-care spaces for families.

“The funding for this child-care centre addition to École élémentaire La Source is great news for our community,” Barrie-Innisfil MPP Andrea Khanjin said in a news release. “This investment will provide choice and flexibility for families and new opportunities for the children of Barrie.”

The new child-care centre addition will include 39 new licensed child-care spaces, two new child-care rooms, and one new EarlyON Child and Family Centre room.

Viamonde Council president Sylvie A. Landry says she's delighted with the expansion of the child-care centre at La Source.

“Thanks to the support of the Ontario government, we will continue to offer more services to families in our territory who want their young people to wake up, grow up and play in a totally French-speaking, secular environment," Landry said in a news release. "These services are essential to our community."
