The biggest soccer event in the city continues to grow, with record numbers coming out for the Spiritfest tournament this weekend.
The Barrie Soccer Club’s marquee event takes place in Midhurst on Saturday and Sunday at the Barrie Community Sports Complex and Tree Nursery Sports Park with just under 75 teams from across Ontario taking part.
Club vice president Will Devellis told BarrieToday he expects a huge crowd of families and supporters to pack the grounds.
“This year, we have so many teams participating from as far away as St. Catharines and Orleans and that will just add to the cheering sections,” said Devellis. “I hope to see many families enjoying themselves and the local teams having just as many supporters out making noise.”
The local soccer club will have 15 teams to cheer for and, while wearing the hat of vice-president of the club and tournament director, Devellis is also coach of two squads who will be playing hard on the pitch.
“There hasn’t been much sleep as we come closer to the event, that’s for sure,” said Devellis. “This a huge undertaking, but it's a great passion for myself and everyone involved.
"These kids play hard every game and anyone who loves soccer needs to come out, you don’t have to have a child involved to be a fan," he added.
The event kicks off today around 8 a.m. and Sunday’s finals are slated for around 5 p.m.
All games and times are available at the BSC website.
