The OPP is investigating after three staff members were attacked at the Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care in Penetanguishene.

The Centre confirms that a "serious incident" happened on Tuesday afternoon.

"We responded to it immediately," said Waypoint spokesperson Laureen Hilderley. "We did have three staff taken to hospital, treated and released."

The OPP said in a news release late Wednesday that three staff members had been assaulted and that a weapon had been used in one of the assaults.

"A comprehensive investigation is underway and mitigation strategies have already been implemented," said Hilderley. "Our priority is the safety and well-being of our patients and staff."

Due to privacy legislation, Hilderley says the hospital cannot comment on any specifics or whether any patients were involved or injured during the incident.

"We are doing a full investigation and look at other safety precautions that would be necessary," said Hilderly

Officers were called to the Centre just after 2 p.m. for a report of an assault.

OPP Acting Sgt. Lynda Cranney says the investigation by the Southern Georgian Bay Crime Unit is still in progress.

No charges have been laid at this time.
