Get ready for an evening of fun, friends and souped-up vehicles during the Summer Slam After Dark (AD3) car show at the 400 Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership on Saturday, Sept. 11, all for a good cause.
The event will run from 3-11 p.m. at 3482, 9th Line in Innisfil, and will be presented by Summer Slam Charity Events (SSCE) Productions and the local dealership.
All of the registration fees will be donated to the Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) in Barrie.
Showcased vehicles will be entered into 10 different trophy classes, including American classic muscle, Chrysler Dodge, Ford, GM, American muscle, full-size truck, import truck, Japanese import, and off-roader. Registration is $30 per vehicle.
“We have people coming back every year with something different done to their car,” said SSCE owner Alexander McKean, who plans and organizes the annual event with a team of volunteers and sponsors.
McKean says points are awarded based on the overall build of the vehicle, quality of work, and modifications to the suspension, wheels/tires, engine bay, and interior.
This year, there will be five best-of awards, including best in show and best overall Chrysler, as well as a 50/50 draw and raffle prizes.
In addition, the Pearl 300 Memorial Award will be given out in honour of Ben Walker, who was a well-known car enthusiast who died from cancer in 2018. Walker was a friend to McKean and his death is what prompted the switch of charity seats to the cancer unit at RVH.
In previous years, the event raised money for cystic fibrosis and usually saw around 70 different types of vehicles registered, except during 2020 when the event was cancelled due to the pandemic.
In 2019, the event raised $1,425 for charity, which is the most SSCE has ever raised.
“There hasn’t been too many car shows the last two summers now with COVID,” says McKean. “I want to expect the same level of people to this show.”
McKean says that due to the current pandemic situation, a couple of programs had to be dropped, such as the audio competition, but he says he hopes to have everything back to normal next year.
“It’s been a lot of hard work, but it’s very rewarding. We couldn’t do our event without the team I have and our sponsors, and the people who keep coming back to help raise money for a good cause,” he says.
This past spring, McKean hosted a car cruise fundraiser around Lake Simcoe, which raised $450 for charity. Last year, he also organized a cruise from Barrie to Blue Mountain for a mask campaign that raised $800 for personal protective equipment (PPE) for health-care workers.
This year, McKean is hoping to reach their goal of $10,000 for the charity. As of now, they are only $1,200 away from the mark.
“We are so excited and we look forward to seeing you there,” he says.
