Barrie’s $112-million capital budget includes an array of road upgrades, building fixes and new truck and equipment purchases.
Infrastructure – the area that includes sewers and water mains, roads and bridges – is the largest area of spending, with approximately $73 million, followed by $8.6 million for building works, $7.7 million for fleet and $5.6 million for parks.
Some of the major projects you can expect to see happening as you drive through the city:
- Essa Road expansion, between Anne and Gowan streets: $8.85 million
- Royal Oak Drive and Bay Lane sanitary servicing: $7.73 million
- Mapleview Drive West watermain work and pumping station: $5.2 million
- New watermain on Ashford and Madeline, between Big Bay Point and Mapleview: $3.7 million
- Sandringham Drive watermain, between Big Bay Point and Mapleview: $3.6 million
- Harvie Road widening, between Essa and Bryne: $3.5 million
- Hewitt’s Creek sewer: Mapleview Drive to Lockhart Drive: $3.25 million
- Mapleview Drive East widening, between Huronia and Country Lane: $3.1 million
- Centennial Park expansion and upgrades: $3.1 million
- Harvie Road crossing: $2.9 million in first year, $2.45 million in its second year and the work increasing to $14.5 million in both 2019 and 2020.

- one conventional bus: $2.1 million
- specialized transit bus: $80,000
- one landfill earth scraper: $800,000
- Barrie Fire airboat: $90,000
- two street sweepers: $295,000 each
- garbage compacting truck: $200,000
