The largest golf tournament in Canadian history - and possibly in the world - will take place this summer in conjunction with Canada's 150th birthday celebrations.

The Great Canadian Golf Tournament will pit local teams against competitors across the country via the internet.

The virtual tournament, presented by PAIRSGolf, will be open to beginner and amateur golfers nationwide and will take place over four to eight weeks starting July 1.

It's a nine-hole knockout tournament. Pairs who keep winning will keep playing.

Seven Simcoe County area courses have already been entered into the contest database: Barrie Country Club, Allandale Golf Course, Innisbrook Golf Course, Landings of Willow Creek, Settlers Ghost, Simoro Golf Links and Skyline Horseshoe Resort.

"Come and play in this ground-breaking event," said Richard Patterson, CEO and President of PAIRSGolf.

"Everyone who participates in the tournament will play a part in the making of Canadian golf history."

The PAIRSGolf system allows participants to play their game of golf on the course of their choosing from across Canada while 'challenging' and 'competing' against players anywhere across Canada.

Players create teams on the website and record their scores for all team members to view.

The system allows for course differences and records your scores accurately as though you are all on the same course.

The cost to sign up for The Great Canadian Golf Tournament is $20 per team along with what organizers say could be a chance to play in possibly a world record breaking event.

In addition to bragging rights, there are 16 sets of golf clubs for the winners in each category.
