Next generation of farmers cultivated at Barrie Fair (8 photos)

4-H members in local beef, dairy, sheep, horse and miniature horse clubs came out to show their projects and compete for ribbons

The 166th version of the Barrie Fair returned to the Essa Agriplex this weekend, with antique farm displays, crafts, vendors, a farm education centre and livestock shows, plus live entertainment.

Friday was Junior Day at the fair. 4-H members in local beef, dairy, sheep, horse and miniature horse clubs came out to show their projects and compete for ribbons – the next generation of farmers stepping into the show ring with their lambs and calves.

It was heartening to see 24 youngsters enter the 4-H Dairy Peewee competition, for kids four to eight years old. They were too young for 4-H, but not too young to be proud of leading their calves into the ring even if some did need a little help from mom or dad.

And dairy judge Scott Brethet of Earincliffe Holsteins, this year’s Simcoe County Premier Breeder and Exhibitor, was delighted to hand out a prize and a medal to each young competitor.

The show wrapped up on Sunday evening.
