Theft suspect bolts across Highway 400

The Barrie Police Service attended the Bayfield Mall after loss prevention officers reported a theft that had occurred. 

Police were able to locate and arrest the suspect after he attempted to flea by running across the 400 highway.

On Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 1:50 p.m. police attended a business located in the Bayfield Mall, at 320 Bayfield Street in the City of Barrie, for the theft of an employee's cell phone. 

While speaking to the victim, the suspect returned to the store but soon fled when he realized the police had been called. 

Police attempted unsuccessfully to stop the male as he left the mall and headed into the Dog Off-Leash Recreation Area located off Coulter Street.

Officers arriving on scene to assist soon spotted the male as he bolted across both the southbound and northbound lanes of Highway 400 just south of Bayfield Street. 

Upon reaching the other side, the male was met by an officer in the YMCA parking lot.

The 17-year-old Barrie male was placed under arrest for the theft under $5,000. 

Further investigation showed he was also on a probation order for a previous offence, adding the charge of Breach Probation to his list.

He was released to his parents on a Promise to Appear with conditions and a future court date. As well he was issued a ticket for Pedestrian on a Controlled Access Highway.
