This week, there are a lot of fun things to do in Barrie — the main problem will be trying to choose!

Monday, August 22

The Barrie Public Library is again full of things for all ages. Bingo, the Instagram Challenge, Scavenger Hunts and even a Lego session will keep the little ones busy as mom and dad take some time to relax with a good book. These events are daily and you are encouraged to check out the BPL website.

Also happening all week is the B-17 Bomber Flying Fortress Exhibition at the Lake Simcoe Regional Airport. Check out one of the most iconic war planes of World War 2. The airport is located at 224 Line 7 North, Oro Medonte Ontario. Times for the event are Monday, August 22 from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, August 24

The Barrie Film Festival and Barrie Fire and Emergency Services present an outdoor screening of the family friendly film Zootopia. Bring your chairs and blankets to Centennial Beach at dusk (approximately 8:30 p.m.) and enjoy a bbq and preshow activities for the kids.

The final Ghost Tour of the summer is happening Wednesday at Discovery Harbour. From 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., you can get chills from the eerie stories told by a guide as footsteps in the hallways and apparitions in the windows bring the event to life.

A very special event takes place Wednesday at the Essa Agriplex at 7505 10th Line in Thorton. The Cows and Cars show is a teaser for the following day’s Barrie Fair and proceeds to this night will go to the Alliston Feed Services in support of the devastating fire they suffered last week. The Cows and Cars runs from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Thursday, August 25

The final Saint-Marie by Candlelight takes place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and showcases the rich history of French and First Nations stories in the area. For more details check the  website.

Starting Thursday and running until Sunday, the 163 Annual Barrie Fair delights folks with the many events and things to see. A demolition derby, tractor pulls, an RCMP Musical Ride and midway highlight the ABF. Check out the  website for the complete rundown.

Saturday, August 27

The much anticipated annual Barrie Dragon Boat Festival takes place and you can check out the race and festivities at heritage Park from 7am to 9pm. There will be children’s activities, live music, a beer tent and of course the races. Check out the BDBF website for all details.

Also happening on Saturday is the Canadian Mental Health Association’s Move It For Young Minds. The awareness and fundraising event takes place at St. Vincent Park Pavilion from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and is a 5km walk around the area along with fitness activities to help bring attention to the plight of the 1.2 million children and youth in Canada who struggle with mental illness. The MFYM event is hoping to gather 200 people and raise over $10,000 with 100% of it going towards the Royal Victoria Hospital. Check out www.mfym.ca for more details.

Sunday, August 28

Kempenfelt Bay will be busy this weekend as Sunday will see the lake full of Stand-Up Paddlers for Paddle 4 The Cure. The Barrie Canoe and Kayak Club will be hosting the event in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and will raise money for the cause through races, tugs-of-war and social paddles. Space is still open and you can register online.
