Thousands help create 'great atmosphere' at Oro World's Fair

Officials estimate up to 20,000 people attended this weekend's event; 'It gives people a reason to get together'

The 170th Oro World's Fair brought thousands to Oro-Medonte this weekend.

Secretary Debbie Brock says it's one of the best agricultural events in the province.

"I always hear that we have a wonderful country environment," she said. "The people here are really friendly, and it makes for a great atmosphere."

The dog agility shows, tractor pulls, and demolition derby were the main attractions of this year's fair.

"We have a diverse group of agricultural attractions. There are also chickens, rabbits, cattle and sheep here today," Brock said.

The fair's mission is to teach youth about agriculture, she says.

"We are really trying to promote and encourage youth to learn about everything that's involved with agriculture," she said. "We want them to be interested in it."

It is estimated 15,000 to 20,000 people attended the two-day fair, which started Friday evening. All the funds raised through admission will go toward next year's fair.

While there was no midway this year, there were inflatable attractions for children to enjoy.

"The midways are hard to get," Brock said. "We've tried to have one every year, but they won't come for a day-and-a-half."

She says the fair won't extended to a three-day event next year because of a lack of volunteers. This year, there were about 200 volunteers.

"They are critical to the success of the fair. We couldn't operate without them," she said.

While Brock says the weather was "perfect" this year, she believes the community would have supported the event even if it had rained.

"It's a social thing for Oro-Medonte residents," she said. "It gives people a reason to get together and be together."

Planning for next year's fair will begin in October. It takes a lot of work for the Oro Agricultural Society and everyone who takes pride in the event, but it's all worth it, Brock said.
