Townships kick off Canada Day long weekend with fireworks, music

Oro-Medonte, Essa and Springwater all celebrating nation's birthday with variety of activities from Saturday to Monday

Fans of fireworks will have two chances to see they pyrotechnics this weekend - Saturday night at Horseshoe Resort and Monday night in Phelpston.

While most folks will celebrate Canada Day on Monday, revellers and party-goers can get a two-day head start at Horseshoe Resort on Saturday when it hosts its annual Canada Day party a bit early.

The day kicks off at 11 a.m. and wraps up with a fireworks display at 10 p.m. 

In between, residents will have the chance to participate in a variety of lawn games, groove to a DJ, partake in a colouring contest, guess the number of candies in a jar, toss some water balloons and join in a scavenger hunt.

Here’s what’s going on in Essa, Springwater and Oro-Medonte townships as the country celebrates another trip around the sun.

Saturday, June 29

Horseshoe Resort

Lawn games — 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Enjoy lawn games with the whole family. Put your strength and aim in action for open games of fun in the sun.

Colouring contest and candy guess — 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

If you can guess the number of candies in the jar, you might win the whole lot. The closest guess without going over will win the candy.

All guests (young in age and young at heart) can colour to their heart's content. Find supplies and guessing ballots at the Tiki Hut.

The cut-off to enter the contests is 8:30. p.m on Saturday, with guesses and colouring sheets to be submitted to the Tiki Hut staff. Must be present to win a pair of Mini Putt tickets or the candy – winners announced at 8:45 p.m.

DJ live mixing — 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Groove along to pop-rock beats on the Après Patio.

Annual Season Pass Scavenger Hunt — 1 p.m.

Participate in the Scavenger Hunt and explore the resort while taking photos at key resort highlights. Follow the clues around the resort for your chance to win a five-day/seven-night season pass for winter 2024-25 or an anytime nordic season pass. All participants of this scavenger hunt will begin at the same time; meet at Guest Services at 1 p.m. sharp.

Water balloon toss — 2:30 p.m.

Bring a partner or meet someone new. See how far you can toss a water balloon without it breaking.

Complimentary Canada Day cake — 3 p.m.

Be on time — this is one cake that everyone wants and it disappears quickly. It’s free on Après Patio.

Cornhole tournament — 4 p.m.

Shoot your shot in a family-friendly competition on the Après Lawn.

Chance to win a $25 gift card to Crazy Horse

Trivia on the patio — 7 p.m.

Test your knowledge on general questions all about Canada, on the Après Patio.

Winners announced — 8:30 p.m.

Sonshine and Broccoli Family concert — 9 p.m. to 9:45 p.m

Dance and sing your heart out on the Après Lawn with songs written for the kids that the whole family can enjoy.

Sonshine and Broccoli will be available until 10 p.m. for photos and autographs.

Fireworks — 10 p.m.

View the fireworks from the Après Patio or almost anywhere else on the resort.

Sunday, June 30

KaJo Food Works and Horseshoe Highland GolfZon and Driving range, located at 85 Highland Dr., will celebrate Canada Day early with food, grab bags, face painting and ice cream.

Monday, July 1

Canada Day celebration at Hawkestone Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with vendors, children’s activities, parade, entertainment and food. The Canada Day parade begins at 1 p.m.

ESSA TOWNSHIP

Angus Lions Canada Day Celebrations

Event opening ceremonies start at 11 a..m. at Angus Community Park, Huron Street, Angus

More than 30 vendors — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Karaoke

Live music

Beer tent

Food for purchase

Free freezies

Free popcorn

Free bouncy castle

Free balloon animals (while they last)

Scavenger hunt

SPRINGWATER TOWNSHIP

The Phelpston Community Recreation Association will hold its annual community fireworks on Canada Day at dusk at the Phelpston Baseball Diamond.  

Fireworks for this display are provided by the community — the more fireworks donated, the longer the show.

There is no cost to attend but a donation of fireworks or cash would be appreciated.

The fireworks display should be about 30 minutes in duration and last year more than 100 people took in the display.
