Two recent fires in Barrie both deemed accidental

Quonset shed sustains minimal damage following Tuesday's fire, while Oct. 2 blaze at west-end auto shop started in engine compartment of a vehicle parked inside

Two recent fires have both been deemed not suspicious, with only one having a hefty price tag due to extensive damages.

Tuesday afternoon’s fire at a Quonset shed near Park Place in south-end Barrie has been deemed accidental, with the cause being undetermined due to the amount of damage within the area of origin, according to local fire officials.

Barrie deputy fire chief Carrie Clark told BarrieToday there won’t be any dollar loss taken into account on what was damaged and the structure remains intact.

The shed is in the area between the retirement residence at Park Place and the new FedEx building, close to the intersection of Bayview Drive and Big Bay Point Road.

“The building is on part of the Park Place lands, but wasn’t in use by the Park Place. It was part of the original site from pre-Park Place days,” Clark said of the former Molson Park property. “The company will be deciding what the future of the structure will be and will ensure it is secured against unauthorized entry until a decision is made.”

Clark had previously said that it appeared people were possibly living in the shed.

Meanwhile, the dollar loss in an Oct. 2 fire at a west-end auto shop has been pegged at more than $1 million.

Regarding the fire at Barrie Frame and Alignment, located at Ferndale Drive and Tiffin Street, Clark said investigators were able to determine a cause and origin.

“The cause of the fire is indicating a fault within an engine compartment of a commercial vehicle that was parked inside the shop," Clark said.

Clark also noted the fire spread outward to the rest of the vehicle and building.

There were no injuries in either blaze.
