CITY OF BARRIE

Residents are invited to drop off their used residential batteries in battery recycling boxes located at select City facilities. The boxes are placed at the following locations:
- East Bayfield Community Centre (80 Livingstone St. E.)
- City Hall (70 Collier St.)
- Allandale Recreation Centre (190 Bayview Dr.)
- Peggy Hill Team Community Centre (171 Mapleton Ave.)
- Surface Water Treatment Plant (20 Royal Parkside Dr.)
- Court Services (45 Cedar Pointe Dr.)
- Barrie Landfill Site (272 Ferndale Dr N.)
- Painswick Library Branch (48 Dean Ave.)
Batteries must be placed in a bag before being put into the box; bags will be available at each box location. The recycling of the batteries is completed through a partnership with Call2Recycle, Canada’s leading national consumer battery recycling organization. After they are dropped in the box, batteries are sorted by type in a processing facility and then recycled to recover their respective components.
Acceptable batteries include:
- All dry-cell single-use batteries (weighing up to five kilograms) including Alkaline (D, C, AA, AAA, 9-volt, etc.), and Lithium Primary. These types of batteries are commonly found in remote controls, car keyless entry remotes, watches, pacemakers, hearing aids, memory back-up fire alarm devices, military electronics, toys etc.;
- Dry-cell rechargeable batteries (weighing up to 5kg) including Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd, Lithium Ion (Li-Ion), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) and Nickel Zinc (Ni-ZN) and Small Sealed Lead Acid (SSLA/Pb). These types of batteries are commonly found in cordless power tools, cordless phones, laptops, cellphones, cameras, two-way radios, etc.
Unacceptable batteries include:
- Single and rechargeable batteries weighing more than 5kg;
- Automotive batteries.
Residents are reminded that batteries cannot be thrown away in traditional recycling or garbage bins. Boxes at these locations will be available until the end of 2023. In 2024, these locations will be evaluated and may be changed.
Battery types not accepted in the battery recycling boxes should be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 272 Ferndale Dr. N., open Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There will be no curbside battery collection this year.
Residents are reminded that prior to disposal, batteries should be stored in a cool, dry location, away from any flammable material. During storage, battery terminals should not be in contact with conductive materials. The terminals on 9-Volt and lithium batteries should be covered with electrical tape prior to storage.
