Friends of Wye Marsh are saddened to report that trumpeter swan J23, better known as Charles, passed away earlier this month.

According to a social media post, Charles was spotted by someone walking near Sainte-Marie among the Hurons a little over a week ago. He then reported the sighting to marsh staff.

"Our team braved the elements by canoe to rescue his body from the Wye River to send for necropsy to determine the cause of death," the organization noted.

The accompanying photo by Anthony Taliana shows Charles and his mate Acorn, trumpeter swan V11, was taken on December 3 and is believed to be the last photo of the two of them together.

"It's a nice way to remember him, and how much he meant to Wye Marsh staff, volunteers and visitors," the post added. "He will be deeply missed."

On a happier note, the Wye Marsh will celebrate the official arrival of winter with a special day of activities next Saturday.

The wide range of activities include bannock roasting, nature crafts, discovery hikes and trumpeter swan viewing. As well, the centre's trails will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the gift shop open until 5 p.m. for those looking for a unique Christmas gift or two.

Admission is by donation.
