Barrie Colts defenceman Beau Akey didn't have to wait long to hear his name called Thursday at the NHL Entry Draft, where the second round got underway in Nashville this morning.
The 18-year-old Waterloo native was picked 56th overall by the Edmonton Oilers with their second-round selection. It was Edmonton's first pick in the draft, as the franchise did not have a selection in the first round, which took place Wednesday night.
According to NHL Central Scouting’s final rankings for the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, Akey was slotted in at No. 33 among North American skaters.
Akey had 47 points (11G, 36A) in 66 games with the Colts this past season in Barrie, his second campaign with the Colts. His point total put him 19th overall in the Ontario Hockey League among blueliners. He also added two goals and three assists in 13 playoff games this past season.
The right-handed offensive defenceman is listed at six-feet tall and 175 pounds.
